Goanna Highboy with the Ringgrill

Since making the Goanna base for the Yagoona range of wood fire grills, many have asked us to go higher. Sitting around the grill was fun and a new social event around a barbecue, but those that really love to grill (and and in many cases are undiscovered culinary talent in their own right) need a higher grilling surface.

Welcome the Goanna Highboy!
80cm Yagoona Ringgrill with Goanna Highboy base.

With the 80cm firepit and Ringgrill, your cooking height is now 96cm.

As you expect from Yagoona, the base is a seperate part which can be used with a variety of different fire pits and grills.

The other logical use for the highboy is to mount the 100cm firepit and Ringgrill.
100cm Yagoona Ringgrill with Goanna highboy base.
With the 100cm firepit and Ringgrill, your cooking height is now 103cm with about double the cooking surface of the 80cm.

The new Ringryll 100cm

It has been some time since I posted anything on my blog - shame on me.

It has been a crazy busy year and it is just now in the seasonal lull between the onset of autumn, which classically marks the end of the grilling season here in Switzerland, and the Christmas season.

This is the first year where I committed myself to a program of exhibitions and trade shows with my garden design products and predominantly, my wood fire grills.
This new strategy proved more successful than I could imagine. Every show I attended was a hit. Heaps of praise, great sales and an amazing ground swell of interest. I think my success was only limited by my ability to attend the shows, and fulfill orders. This stretched my capacity to breaking point!

It is no question that I will do it again next year with a bit more ambition, and help.

Seeing as I have some time to catch up with things, my mind turns to improvements to my products and new versions of them.

Here is the first of them. It is the new Ringryll 100cm

The 0 series of the new Yagoona Ringryll 100cm awaiting testing

The previous version was very well received and sold well but there were a few things that I was not quite happy with.

Ringryll 100cm - original version

The squared opening was a change to the completely round design of the Ringryll 80 which was the first social grill from Yagoona. I have always felt that the completely round design optically looked very nice, but had a practical down side: it prevented the user to clean off the cooking gunk from your bbq tools on the edge. What was required was some 'straight' edge in the design for this purpose.

So for this new Ringryll, I make a perfect square in the middle and shifted the joins of the plates to the diagonals. This was a change that as soon as I sketched it, I knew that it was right.
A combination of a square inside a circle is a very acient motif indead, and probably best known for its use in Chinese currency starting in the Qing (Ch'ing) Dynasty.

This design change has brought some other benefits to the grill. The opening for the fire was a little on the large side in the first design, meaning that it could take anywhere from 30-45 minutes between starting the fire to cooking. With this new squared design, the opening is now smaller which should result in a faster heat up time.
This design change also adds about 10% more cooking space to the overall barbecue cooking area.

Ringryll 100 from the top with the Barramundi BBQ
The last change was quite small, it is regarding the use of the Ringryll with the Barramundi BBQ.
Many people have purchased the combination of the Ringryll with the Barramundi BBQ both in the Ringryll 80 and the 100cm sizes.
These set-ups allow you to get the best of both worlds: social grilling together with the direct over the heat grilling better suited to steaks, sausages and kebabs.
The problem with the old design was that the Barramundi BBQ simply sat on top of the Ringryll plates. If you wanted to scrape something stubborn (such as burn on honey marinade) off the Barramundi BBQ cook plates, it could happen that the entire Barramundi BBQ could slide around on the hot greasy Ringryll cook plates. If the Barramundi BBQ happen to slide right off the Ringryll, this could result in quite a disaster.
The solution was to create small slots in the Ringryll to hold the feet of the Barramundi BBQ in place directly over the center of the fire. No more sliding!

Kookaburra barbecue

A few posts ago, I showed a simple diagram that hinted at a new barbecue design.
This was a long standing reaction to a repeated request for a ringryll barbecue for the smaller 65cm firepits. Well after looking at geometry and design, I gave up on simply shrinking the 80cm Ringryll to a 65cm size.

So I decided on a complete redesign of the concept and this is what I came up with

Kookaburra Barbeuce - looking a bit line pacman!

This design overcomes the largest problem of simply shrinking down the Ringryll, cooking space. Now there is enough plate space for a good barbecue.

A smaller Ringryll...

Ringryll mini...

Ever since I released the Ringryll (80cm) there has been a rush to get one.
It is the most popular barbecue I make. I released a Ringryll 100cm but found that everyone wants the 80!
There have been many who have asked for the Ringryll to be adapted for the 65cm Firepit, but I was distracted by other things until now.

This is the hint...

Yagoona Barbecue wall hanger - redesigned

Since the initial ideas of the Barramundi BBQ, I have thought about what happens to the barbecue when it is not in use. The simplest solutions are often the best so that was my goal. And you cannot get more simple than the Yagoona barbecue wall hanger.

This simple plate bolts onto your wall in your garage or garden storage room. The 2 high tensile steel rods coincide exactly with the holes that are integrated into every part of the Yagoona Barramundi BBQ. And more recently, the Yagoona Ringryll barbecues (the 80cm and the 100cm) also feature these holes.
This means that the one product is compatible with all the Yagoona barbecues.
In fact the firepit lids from Yagoona also have these same holes so they can also be safely stored away on this wall hanger.

Redesigned?

There was a predecessor to this wall hanger. Its design was simply not appealing to me. Yagoona products should not only work well, be easy to use and durable, but they should also look simple and modern. During the redesign of the wall hanger, I also managed to optimise the production so as to reduce the waste in the metal cutting. It feels good to give the environment a bonus as well.

This new hanger can be purchased online by following this link.
Not sure if it is what you need? Contact Yagoona and we will be more than happy to answer any of your questions about this hanger.

The Ringryll - the social barbecue

Yagoona Ringryll feuerschale ring barbecue feuerring

As you all may already know, from a barbecue design perspective, my design focus is in the category of wood burning barbecues.

It you go back in time on this blog you may get a glimpse of the Barramundi Barbecue, and again I notice a woefully inadequate coverage on this product in this blog. Will have to correct that soon.
To stay on the subject though, the Ringryll.

With a veritable over supply of mega gas grillers and now with the emergence of electric barbecues, the traditional solid fuel barbecues seem to have been forgotten.
But there have been a few new grills in the European market that target barbecuing as a social activity. This is where the Ringryll comes in.

The basis of this barbecue is the standard Yagoona firepit (feuerschale in German). A decorative item for the garden sitting area. Atop this fits a frame and 4 heavy steel plates that when assembled create a wide ring that straddles the edge of the firepit.

The operation of this barbecue is very simple. A fire is started in the center of the Ringryll inside the firepit. The fire will heat the heavy metal of the cookplates. This is where you cook. The closer to the inner edge, the hotter the plate. The outside edges of the plate will typically not be so hot making this zone ideal for slower cooking foods.

The ring design is intended to maximise access to the cooking surface and allow your barbecue guests to cook their own food. Classic Swiss "cook it yourself" fondue style.
The complete 360 degree access to the cooking surface creates that strong 'gather around the fire' feeling.

Just prepare a whole variety of raw foods such as stuffed mushrooms, mini skewers, chunky sliced potatoes, supply some sauces and seasonings and let the fun begin.
Virtually anything that can be cooked in a pan can be cooked on the Ringryll.

To the more technical aspects of this design. The cookplates are made from 8mm steel plate. Each one weigh around 6kg and possesses superb heat transmitting and retaining properties. The perfect surface for barbecuing.
Most importantly, the plates do not cool when a piece of cold meat hits it, meaning vastly better cooking performance and no sticking.

The entire Ringryll can be easily removed and stored leaving you to enjoy your firepit on its own. Storing away the plates protects them from rusting and enables easy cleaning of ash from the firepit.

It is important to note here that rim of the firepit be level before using the Ringryll. The Yagoona system of independent firebowl and base makes minor adjustment to level of the bowl edge easy. If your bowl is not level, then the plates will not be level and when hot, the fats will run off the edge of the barbecue.

When mounted, the Ringryll stands several millimeters above the rim of the firebowl. This is quite important for a healthy air supply to the fire within, and promotes better heat dispersion around the plates.

So even if you have the gas barbecue that is the envy of all your neighbours, you may still find that the Ringryll is an appealing option for those intimate "cook around the fire" moments with close family and friends.
